The Ottawa Valley’s Great Fire of 1870 has been a puzzle to historians for decades. It was always obvious that a major disaster took place in the Ottawa area in 1870, but the extent and duration of the catastrophe were unclear. By searching broad resources and combining information in new ways, historian Terry Currie has produced a sharp new perspective on the Great Fire.
